Hyaluronic Acid

One of my favourite skincare products - HYALURONIC ACID

What is it?
Hyaluronic acid sounds like a severe product but it actually holds the key to smooth, flawless and hydrated skin. It is naturally produced in our own skin to maintain moisture levels. Hyaluronic acid has the ability to draw and hold water in our skin cells. However, this declines as we age.

The benefits
Keeps skin hydrated, plump and healthy.
Reduces the appearance of wrinkles making it a very important anti aging product.
Non irratating which can be used on all skin types including sensitive.

Hyaluronic acid is one of my go-to products that I use daily. It is best applied on cleansed, damp skin. Use moisturiser or night cream after.

My favourite serums are:
The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2%
Pestle & Mortar Pure Hyaluronic Serum.

Acne Mechanica from face masks

Wearing face masks have now become part of our daily life. And more than likely you're getting a few blemishes that you may never got before. I have found that after a few hours of wearing a mask, I break out along where my mask has been. More so, if I am wearing makeup. So back I went to my beauty therapy bible from collage and found out a little more information.

WHAT IS IT?

Acne Mechanica is a skin condition we get from wearing our masks. It is caused from heat, abrasion and friction. It is also quite common with sports players who wear head bands or helmets too. Heat causes pores to dilate, leaving them open for any debris to accumulate. Continued friction from our masks irritates the skin and the pressure seals in warmth, debris and dead skin against the skins surface. The three of these together cause a build up of bacteria, resulting in pustules and papule on the skin.

WHAT TO DO?

Keep your skin as clean as possible. Double cleanse the skin every night and try use an oil based cleanser to dissolve any makeup and oil that have built up during the day. You could also use an anti inflammatory product with tea tree oil as the main ingredient. If using a tea tree oil on its own be sure to mix with a carrier cream, as it can damage the skin when used neat. Use a warm face cloth or flannel to remove the cleanser. Keep the skin hydrated with serum and moisturiser.

HOW TO TREAT IT?

Salicylic Acid: This works deep in to the pores to break up the dead skin and will prevent a build up of product on the skins surface. The most effective way to use this is through a cleanser 2/3 times a week. Try La Roche-Posay Effacer Micro-Peeling Gel Wash €22.95

Glycolic Acid: This is an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) and is found in a lot of our skin products at present. You may also find this as a key product in chemical peels. It is effective in reducing existing blemishes. Use this once a day, preferably at night time. Try The Ordinary Glycol Acid 7% Toning Solution €9.99

Benzoyl Peroxide: This product works by increasing the skin cell turnover rate and clearing dead skin cells, bacteria and oil from the pores. You can pick this up in pharmacies over the counter in a gel like form.

Retinol: Start by applying this product once a week. It speeds up the process of shedding dead skin cells but be careful as it can also irritate the skin. An effective product that can be used to reduce inflammation and minimise oil on the skin. Try The Inkey List Retinol Serum €11.99

MASKS

Opt for fabrics such as cotton or linen which will allow the skin to breathe and sweat to evaporate. Be sure to wash it after every use.

If you have found any products that have helped you with blemishes or you have any skin questions,  let me know in the comments below.

Irish beauty blog awards

It is the fifth year of The Irish Beauty Blog Awards and I was absolutely thrilled to hear that I was nominated for the "Makeup Influencer Of The Year". I had been nominated for these National awards a few years back and it was such a great night being among the best in the business - Suzanne Jackson, Pippa and Rosie Connolly to name a few.
This award is based on public vote so I was amazed to hear I went on to be longlisted, then shortlisted and then to the finals!!
The awards night were held in House, Dublin last week and one of my best friends Aine, was my plus one.
I didn't bring home an award but had the best night, meeting familiar faces and also some new faces. Thank you to every single person who voted for me. I really have the best clients and followers and wouldn't be where I am without you. I have made so many friends through my work in the last few years and can't wait to make so many more.
Here are a few pics from the night..

Some dinner and bubbles at Cliff Townhouse before heading to House for the ceremony.

The last time I met Lucy Kennedy was in 2013 when I did her makeup for a shoot. So good to catch up again with her, such a fabulous lady.

And of course Louis Walsh had to get in the selfie action too!

A night cap at The Shelbourne Hotel to finish off the best night.

And of course meeting Mr Greg O Shea from Love Island at the airport was such a highlight too!
Thank you again for all the votes, your support means so much to me.

Love, Annette x

AWARDS "Business Woman of the year 2019" & "Celebrity Makeup Artist of the year 2019"

2019 has been a fantastic year for me and it's not over yet. I am thrilled that I have been nominated in so many awards for my work.

I was a finalist for "Bridal MUA Of The Year" in the Brides of Kerry Awards, the same award that I won last year. At this awards ceremony they had four other speciality awards. "Business Woman Of The Year"was one of those awards and you could only imagine my reaction when I heard I had won!! Such an honour to win this as I am now 14 years in business.

Two weeks later, The Irish Makeup Awards were held in Dublin. These awards are the highest  national makeup industry awards. This time I was a finalist for "Celebrity MUA Of The Year" and won it also!! I was a finalist amongst four well known makeup artists based in Dublin and I was so proud to make the final, never mind to win the award.

In the last two months I have been nominated for two more awards. The first is "Makeup Artist of The Year" with Romantic Wedding Awards and "Best Makeup Influencer 2019" with Beauty Blogs Awards Ireland, it is so amazing to be recognised at a National level once again.

I feel this blog is a platform of my work and showcases the products I love, places I have been and things I love doing. I started it long before Facebook and Instagram and even before my website. Even though I don't blog a lot, it always reminds me of where I started off in my makeup career. I got shortlisted for these awards back in 2015 and attended the awards night amongst influencers like Pippa O'Connor and Suzanne Jackson.. I really couldn't believe it!

I am so grateful for every like on my photos, every comment or question on posts and every phone call from a bride looking for me to beautify them on their special day.
Thank you as always for the love and support.

Joanne at Ballyseede Castle, Tralee

"I had Annette O'Brien booked to do my make-up for the day of our wedding (March 2018). She is absolutely brilliant at what she does. She is so cool, calm and collected. She is extremely professional and kept everyone at ease on a morning full of emotion. She completed my makeup, my 3 bridesmaids and my Mam's makeup also. Everyone was delighted with how they looked. She gives great advice and knows exactly what she is doing. Anyone looking to have flawless makeup on their wedding day should book Annette. You will not be disappointed.
I love makeup as do my 3 sisters- so we were fussy customers!! I think we all looked fabulous and we felt it too. Thanks so much Annette - You're brilliant xx Joanne"
